Neuropathological studies were carried out on 41 brains of elderly, non-demented patients in Somdet Chaopraya Hospital, a teaching neuropsychiatric hospital. Light microscopy showed 24.4% of senile changes (senile plaques, neurofibrillary change, granulovacuolation degeneration) ; 14.6% had senile plaques. The incidence was greatest at ages above 70 and interestingle lower among the psychiatric patients. Also, the present study implies that the frontal lobe seems less significant than the temporal lobe in leading a usual life of the aged and senile plaques are more likely to occur first in the occipital lobe.
