Psychoses and neuroses are chronic illnesses. The treatment expense is therefore a monthly expense for the patients. In order to see how the drug expense or each patient should be 3,782 prescriptions of psychiatric outpatients at Somdej Hospital in April 1981 were collected. After calculation, it was found that the total drug expenses were 472,525baaht and the average for each psychiatric outpatient per month was 105.71 baht. The analyses of psychotropic drugs used were also analysed in this study. The results obtained revealed that most of the patients received 2 or more psychotropic drugs at the same time and many got the same type of drugs. However, a dosage form with combination from of drugs was rarely dispensed. In onefourth of the total prescriptions, anxiolytics as well as hypnotics were used simultaneously, Interestingly, antiparkinsons were not always prescribed together with antipsychotics.
