Objectives; The aim of the study was to compare the rates of suicidal attempt (SA) like a reason of admittance to closed ward of psychiatric department in different diagnoses. Materials and methods; We evaluated retrospectively all admittances to woman closed ward of psychiatric department of 1st medical school Charles University Prague separately in two diagnostic groups schizophrenia and bipolar affective disorder (BP), for SA reason from January 2004 to July 2004. For evaluation we used final diagnosis in discharge report. Results; During these 7 months we admitted 46 patients with schizophrenia and 12 patients with BP. In schizophrenia group 5 patients 10.87% were admitted after SA. In BP group 2 patients 16.67% were admitted after SA. All patients admitted for SA from schizophrenia group were paranoid subtype. One patient admitted for SA from BP group in manic episode, second patient admitted for SA was in major depressive episode. Conclusion: Patients with BP were frequently admitted after SA than patients with schizophrenia. SA and suicidality in general are more often problems of patients with BP than schizophrenia. In our sample was only paranoid subtype of schizophrenia with of SA. Disadvantage of BP group is a small size.
