Objectives: Suicide and attempted suicide rates in Sri Lanka fall within the highest group of countries in the world. Of the suicides, majority is among the youth. To date there has been only a few descriptive studies that investigate the sociological risk factors for youth suicidal behavior in the country. This study was aimed at assessing sociological risk factors associated with attempted suicides among the youth in Sri Lanka. Methods: A sample of 124 cases admitted to a sub-urban hospital in Sri Lanka was interviewed using a semi-structured questionnaire. Results: Of the total 67% were women. The mean age was 20.04 years. About 36% had used pesticides or insecticides, 34% of the subjects had used medicinal drugs and 15.3% had used kerosene oil to attempt suicide.45.1%n were exposed to any kind of previous suicidal attempts. Family conflicts 35.4% disagreements with partners 17.7% breaking love affaires 8% are the main precipitating factors. Poor educational attainment 64.5% was the main predisposing factor. Further none of the subjects had contact with any counseling services. Conclusions: Among youth there is a female preponderance in the study population which comparable to western studies. Majority used pesticides or insecticides but increasingly other domestic substances are used such as medicine. Low educational attainment and family conflicts are major contributing factors. Providing easily accessible counselling services is a need of the population study.
