Objectives: The suicide rate in Korea have almost doubled for the last 10 years. Suicide has become a significant national problem in Korea, as reflected by the media report of the cases of latest suicides by a few celebrities, a joint suicide with the strangers meeting through internet, and a homicide-suicide. Analyzing the change of the suicidal trends and the social and cultural meaning of suicide among Koreans seems to be imperative to prevent suicide effectively. Material and Methods: Based on the official statistics from death certificates provided by the Korean national statistical office, the changes of total number of suicide victims, suicide rate, sex, age, region, occupation and methods of attempting suicide of suicide victims were analyzed. In addition, the relationship of social and economical changes in the last decade in korea to suicide was examined. Results: The number of completed suicide in Korea is estimated to be 4,123 and the suicide rate is 10.6 in 1993. The corresponding figures in 2002 have increased to 8,631 and 19.1 respectively. Among age groups over 25 years, the suicide rates in 2002 has risen compared to 1993, especially, the suicide rate in older age group (over 55) has increased two-fold, compared to younger age group. More than half of the suicides among the 15-64 years, who are economically active poplation were economically inactive state (unemployed, students or housewives) Conclusion: It is imperative to understand the change in trends and characteristics of suicides in Korea in a social and cultural perspective in order to prevent effectively. We will discuss the results and the strategies of suicide prevention in Korea.
