This study aimed to study relationship between selected factors and depression of hospitalized elders. Subjects included 120 hospitalized elders. Data were collected through questionnaires, consisting of ability in performing daily living activities questionnaire, depression scale adapted from Thai Geriatric Depression scale, family relationship questionnaire, Perceived severity of illness questionnaire, and Personal data questionnaire. Mean age of subject was 72.3 years, 54.2 percent were male whereas, 45.8 were female. Results revealed that 61.7% of subjects have depressed, whereas, 37.5% of this group rated as mild depression 21.7% as moderate depression, and 2.5% as severe depression. There was a significant relationship between depression and ability in performing daily living activities (r=.36), relationship with family (r=.26), and length of stay (r=.17). From multiple regression analysis with stepwise method, these four factors explaind 36% of variance of depression. Ability in performing daily living activities, perception of illness severity, family relationship, and length of stay in hospital explained 21%, 6.3%, 6% and 3% of variance of depression, consecutively. The findings reflected that enhancing elders' ability in performing their activities during hospitalization will lessen elderly's depression Talking with patient about their severity of illness, as well as enhancing family relationship are also recommended as nursing interventions for preventing or lessening depression of elders.
