รายละเอียด / Details:

This study investigated how beliefs and practices related to Buddhism influence Thai elderly’s views of life and their psychological well-being. Qualitative analysis based on data collected from 5 focus groups and 23 in-depth interviews with 67 old persons aged 60 and above in Bangkok and Ratchaburi in May 1998.Nine beliefs about Buddhism and 12 related practices of activities emerged. Majors findings showed that Buddhist beliefs led the elderly to view life as “doing good deeds lead to good outcomes, bad deeds lead to bad outcomes” (Tum Dee Dai Tum Vhua Dai Chua). Results of one’s deeds could appear in this life or the next life; one should do only good deeds and one should remain calm in precarious events. Buddhist beliefs in this study resulted in related religious activities yet without commitments or obligations. The most distinctive belief that in fluenced the psychological well-being of Thai elderly was “Tam Jai”, or taking life as it is. All types of belief were related to psychological well-being happy when making merits, being helpful, being respected, and feeling contented when one’s children led a good life. Each of related religious activities contributed toward their psychological well-being.
