รายละเอียด / Details:

A household survey was conducted between December 2002 and January 2003 to determine knowledge and practice related to diarrheal diseases control among caretakers of children‹5 years old in public health region 2. A total of 2,400 caretakers were randomly selected throughout the area by cluster technique in 60 groups. They were interviewed by trained health workers using questionnaire modified from the WHO household survey for diarrhea. Chi-square test was used to determine difference between proportions. About half 50.1% of caretakers were mothers and 65.3 percent had an education level of primary school. The diarrheal episoders in children were 1.1 and 0.8 person/year in children<2 years old and < 5 years old respectively. Of the caretakers surveyed 16.3 percent knew that children with diarrhea should receive in creasing oral rehydration fluid, 52.6 percent knew that sick children should receive food as usual or even more, and 46.3 percent were aware of the serious symptoms that required treatment in institutions. Only 4.6 percent were well versed in all of the above. Breastfeeding in children<4 months old was 56.6 percent and bottle feeding in children<1 year old was 64.1 percent. Among the caretakers reported hygienic handwashing was 11.3 percent before preparation of feeding and 34.6 percent after defecation. About 71.4 percent of the caretakers could manage stool disposal of the children properly. Of the 80 children with diarrhea within 2 weeks prior to the interview 38.8 percent received treatment in public health care centers 70.1 percent received oral rehydration salts 43.8 percent had antibiotics. Most of the caretakers knew how to prepare the ORS. Occupation of caretakers handwashing before preparation of feeding and after defecation, means of stool disposal and cleaning of bottle before feeding were found to be associated with diarrhea in these children. Health education about diarrheal management in children and practice of hygienic handwashing among the caretakers is essential. Health personnel and drug store sellers should be educated to reduce unnecessary use of antibiotic and antidiarrheal drugs.
