‹dd< objective: To study the prevalence of depression, differential diagnoses of depressive episodes, and factors associated with depression in medical inpatients of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital. The sample consisted fo 200 patients (the male to female ratio was 1:1) The mini international Neuropsychiatric interviwe and clinical observation were used as means of data collection. Data were statistically analyzed in terms of frequency distributions, percentages, means, standard deviations, Chi-square tests, and content analyzes. Results: The study revealed that 36% of the sample was suffering from depression, with the male to female ratio of 1:1.3. Diagnoses of patients with depression were major depressive disorder, dysthymic disorder, and adjustment disorder with depressed mood, which accounted for 79.2%, 11.1% and 9.7%, respectively. One factor associated with depression was having medications to control their own underlying medical disease (s) (p=0.008). Furthermore, the other factors which had been found to be related to high incidence of depression were being female, having a low income, being unemployed, being divorced, having general medical disorder(s) having respiratory disorder(s) having kidney disease(s) having a terminal illness, having been psychiatric patients, and having positive family history of psychiatric illness. Conclusion: The prevalence rate of depression among inpatients was equal to 36% with major depressive disorder accounting for the highest number of inpatients with depression
