Objective: To study the unit cost of bipolar disorder and to determine the differences between unit cost and Diagnostic Related group (DRG) cost as well as unit cost and the net revenue collected from patients. Method: A retrospective study of cost analysis was conducted with 40 bipolar disorder patients who were admitted at Ramathibodi Hospital from January 1, 2000 to December 31, 2000. Results: The total number of days of admission was 944 days, and the average admission duration is 23.6+16.4 days per person. The average unit cost of bipolar disorder was 37,657.15 baht per case and 1,597.03 baht per day, while the DRG cost was 10,049.33 per case, and the average net revnue collected from patients was 15,612.90 baht per case. Conclusion: There was a big difference of 27,607.83 baht per case between the unit cost and the DRG cost. In addition, there was a difference of 22,046.25 baht per case between unit cost and the average net revenue collected from patients.
