This presentation will discuss the current incidence of suicide, with reference to age, sex, race and world region. The causes of suicide,suicide gestures, mechanisms of suicide and relationship to psychiatric illness will be presented. Current public health statistics and potential intervention to reduce the risk of suicide will be discussed. This presentation will be based primarily on western medical literature, with the main emphasis on suicides in the U.S. and Europe. The current public health statistics on suicide in Thailand will be presented by an instructor from the Public Health Faculty, HCU. The groups at risk, by age, sex and occupation will be presented. Incidence and mechanisms of suicide in Thailand will be discussed, with potential interventions to reduce the rate of suicide in Thailand. Literature is based upon and reflects real life. Over the centuries, many writers have used suicide as a major theme in their literary works. This begins with the well knows suicide by the Greek philosopher, Socrates, as described by Plato. Suicides have also been used in later literature:Queen Dido in the Aeniad, in many episodes in the plays of Shakespeare and in many modern novels. The occurrence of suicide in literature, with the identified causes and mechanisms will be discussed.
