The objectives of this research were to describe the impact in caregivers of chronic schizophrenic patients and to explore predictive factors, in terms of age, sex, religion, educational level, occupation, the relations between the patients and the caregivers, perceived family economic status, time period of being a caregiver, perceived supportive resources, knowledge of caring for schizophrenia and perceived patients self care abilities. Subjects included 250 caregivers of chronic schizophrenic patients by accidental sampling at Out Patient Department in Songkhla Neuro-Psychiatric Hospital (Psychiatric Songkhla Rajanagarindra Hospital). Basic statistics and stepwise multiple regression were used for data analysis. The stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that thirty percents of variance of perceived impact of cargivers for chronic schizophrenic patients was accounted by four factors: perceived patients self-care abilities, the relations between the patients and the caregivers, perceived family economic status, and perceived supportive resources. This finding can be used to develop protocol or guideline for caregivers by focusing on patients self-care abilities, psychotic symptoms management skills and to available supportive resources in community.
