Since 1960, the Samaritan Befrienders Hong Kong (SBHK) operated as the only suicide prevention hotline in Hong Kong. The service has been providing emotional support to suicidal person over the phone for over 40 years. In keeping with a long standing tradition in voluntary suicide prevention organizations such as the Samaritans and Befrienders International, SBHK was run by highly trained volunteers who maintained a service that was widely recognized by the community. As an extension and expansion in terms of level and scope of service a professionally staffed crisis service was implemented with the assistance of the social welfare department. The suicide crisis intervention centre operates around the clock targeting individuals with moderate and high suicide risks. The synergy of the 2 services provided and effective continuity of care for those are at risk.
