Objectives: To study the rate alcohol drink problems and factors related to alcohol drinking among psychiatric outpatients at Srinagarind Hospital. Methods: A cross sectional survey was conducted among psychiatric outpatients at Srinagarind Hospital every 9.00-10.00 A.M. of Thursday during October 1st-December 31st, 2003. There were fifty patients collected during the observation period. Demographic questionnaires and alcohol use disorder identification test (AUDIT) and interviewing by the investigator using a semi-structured interview to collect personal data, personal data, pattern of alcohol use and how dependence’s on alcohol were developed were among the important research instruments. The psychiatric ICD-10 diagnosis of the patients were gathered from the outpatient medical records. Results: The rate of alcohol drinking problems among psychiatric outpatients was 36% Factors related to alcohol drinking in psychiatric patients were male gender positive attitudes towarding alcohol stressors and peer pressure. Conclusions: Psychiatric outpatients had more alcohol drinking problems than the general population. Factors related to alcohol drinking were mental health status and environment. Therefore, psychiatric outpatients should be screened for alcohol drinking problems and a guideline for prevention and effective treatment for psychiatric cases with this comorbidity should be implemented.
