Objective: To determine effectiveness of brief intervention for problem alcohol drinkers by using motivational enhancement therapy in primary care unit (PCU) setting. Methods: Data was collected from July 2003 to April 2004 in Ubonratchatanee and Chachengsao province using randomized control clinical trial. A total of 8 PCU were located. Subjects was identified by AUDIT (alcohol use disorder identification test) method. Of 122 volunteers 64 were randomized into intervention (IV) group who received brief intervention from nurses who were trained in using Motivational Enhancement Therapy. Evaluations were done at 1.5 month, 3 month and 6 month period. Results: There were significant reduction in alcohol drinking for all measuring parameters (p‹0.05) and the total alcohol volume consumption was decreased below safety limit (p<0.05). At every follow-up the numbers of standard drinkers in the IV group were less than the control group significantly (p<0.05). Both episodes of at-risk drinking behavior and the gamma-glutamyltransferace level after 6 months follow-up in the IV group were lesser than control group (p<0.05). Conclusion: This study provides the first direct evidence that brief intervention for problem alcohol drinkers by using Motivational Enhancement Therapy is effective at Primary Care Unit setting in Thai health care system.
