รายละเอียด / Details:

Objective: The is a retrospective study of completed suicide cases examined by forensic pathologists in Hospital Kuala Lumpur, between January 2000 and December 2002. The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of these cases in the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur. Methods: The data were collected for cases identified as suicide after postmortem. Police and chemical pathology reports were also examined. Other demographic data were also collected. Results: A total of 152 cases out of 2,533 postmortems were identified as suicides. The distribution according to race was follows: Malays 12.5% (N=19) Chinese 48% (N=73) Indians 26.3% N=40 and others 13.2% N=20. However, when the values were calculated in reference to the Kuala Lumpur population, Indians predominate amongst the suicide cases. This is in keeping with previous studies on suicide in this area. There has been a change in methods employed when compared to previous studies. Jumping from height has become more popular, but hanging remained the predominant method. Conclusion: The main limitation of this study was that many suicide cases may have been missed due to missing case notes. In addition, not all suicide victims underwent postmortem. As suicide is preventable, it is thus important to understand the characteristics of suicide cases in our local setting. Collaborative effort amongst related agencies should be increased to look into preventative measures. Suggestions for future research would be; to conduct a comparative study looking at suicide cases in hospitals located in different parts of Malaysia, and to collaborate with the police for more accurate statistics on suicide.
