Objective : To study definition of mental health according to Isan people's perception Method: Qualitative research using in-dept interview with 121 participants from 113 families was conducted. Data were analyzed by Colaizzi's method. Results: The finding indicated that most participants used the word "happiness" to refer to good mental health. Furthermore, they defined mental health in various dimensions including emotional state, state of mind, capability for controlling thought, and absence of stress. Also, mental problem was a continuum of state of mind from preoccupation, unawareness, and madness. Finally, the fact that people were able to comply with customs and traditions of society as well as the fact that they were able to accept the situations they were facing enabled them to maintain their happiness in life. Conclusions: Isan people defined mental health in terms of including thought and emotion. Buddhist teachings about awareness of thoughts and emotions are an appropriate way of enhancing mental health and preventing mental health problems in compliance with Isan people's beliefs, values, and ways of life
