Natural disasters, for instance the "Tsunami" in the southern of Thailand, are traumatic to those encountered. The events injure physically, cognitively and emotionally. They also damage survivors' social interactions.Short term impacts include variety of responses to stress while long term are psychiatric disorders or behavioral problems. Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a major psychiatric disorder happened as a result of traumatic events. Its major symptoms comprise of re-experience, avoidance and hyperarousal. These symptoms are belived to results from unintegration of traumatic experiences into the mental structure. Defense meechanisms such as repression, denial, projection are used. Many predisposing, precipitating and perpetuating risk factors have been proposed. Treatments of patients with PTSD include medications and various forms of psychotherapy. Some researches indicate that any form of psychotherapy improves approximately 67 percent of all patients. Trauma desensitization and hypbotherapy have successfully reduced intrusive memories or re-experience and psychodynamic psychotherapy is efficient in managing avoidance. Psychodynamic psychotherapy also has good outcomes in terms of reconstructing mental organization and personality of patients.Main principles of such therapeutic of such therapeutic intervention is composed of establishing sense of safety, therapeutic alliance, goal settings, management of disturbing symptoms, working through and handling of termination.
