Child abuse constitutes a prevalent and severe form of environmental stress in a child’s physical health, mental health status and development, especially in children, which are still developing. This research is to examine the mental health status of abused students, the types of abuse, and the relationship between students’ mental health status and types of abuse. The samples were 387 senior primary school students of the primary school in Bangkok Noi District, Bangkok Metropolitan. Data was collected through questionnaires on demographic data, physical and sexual abuse, and mental health status. The data was analyzed by frequency distribution, percentage, and chi-square test. The results of this research show that 84% of the sample have a good level of mental health status, whereas 16% have a poor level of mental health status. Anxiety (17.1%) is found to be the most common dimension in those at a poor level. 83.7% of the sample were involved in physical abuse, 16.3% were involved in sexual abuse. The most common physical abuse was hitting with an object, however, the frequency of it was rare (once in a while). The most common form of sexual abuse was persuasion to use obscene language, however, the frequency of it was rare (once in a while). Mental health status is significantly related to types of abuse at the level of .05. Depression, anxiety and aggression are significantly related to types of abuse at the level of .05. The results of this research suggest that psychiatric nurses should realize the importance of assessing the mental health status of abused students, especially sexually abused students. Family and teachers should be encouraged to offer help and caring in order to support the students in living normal lives. They can also help by screening and referring students for proper treatment.
