To study 1) the change of mental health after insight meditation training program and 2) the effects of sex, age level of education, occupation annd experience in meditation on the training program. The sample consisted of subjects who were interested in the insight meditation training program which was held at faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University from October 17-24, 1999. The subjets were 15 males and 38 females, aged form 11-72 years. The instrument used to assess mental health was the Thai version of General Health Questionnaire (GHQ), which was developed by Tana Nilchaikovit et al. The GHQ-60, and GHQ-28 with four subscales : 1. Somatic symptoms, 2. anxiety and insommia, 3. Social dysfunction and 4. Sever depression were utilized in the study. After the insight meditation training the subjects showed a significant improvement of metal health and a reduction of four sunscales (P‹.05). The proportion of a group with normal mental health and a group with mental health problem was significantly different before the practice of insight meditation and a reduction of proportion of a group with mental problem after the practice (P<.05). Level of education is the only one variable revealed the effect on the insight meditation training program. The practice of insight meditation is an effective method for the development and enhancement of mental health. The mindfulness (sati) and clear comphrehension (sampajana) that derive from the practice can be applied to a daily living.
