The review of alcohol consumption in Thailand showed an evidence of an increasing per capita trend from 7.46 liter in 1990 to 13.59 liter in 2000, a –one fold increase in a decade and was internationally ranked as the fifth The National Statistical Office reported that 35.5 percent of the Thai people are alcohol drinkers some started at 11 years of age The majority of alcohol consumption was 74.6 percent of 25-44 year old male There is an increasing number of male drinkers in particular the rate was 21.2 percent of the teenage group (11-19 years) Formidable 6 time increase (1.0-5.6 percent) of female drinkers (15-19 years ) was observed within 7 years (1996-2003) lt seemed that young Thais started to drink at ever younger age Therewae a strong indication that drinking became more popular in every age group of both genders and could be measured at the rate of a one-fold increase of number of drinkers every three years The critical factors conducive to drinking behavior were friends family social and culture in addition commercial advertisement was an important factor as well The media contributing considerably to alcohol consumption among teenagers were television and movies Although large efforts have been made to discourage drinking such as campaigning aiming to increase public awareness no visible result could been witnessed
