A community health survey of Tambon Ko Chan, King Amphoe Ko Chan, Chon Buri Province was carried out on May 30, 2002. Clustered random samples of 4 villages were drawn from 15 villages, getting 224 households and 1,069 people. The healds of the households were interviewed by fourth-year medical students, Chulalongkon University. The results showed that the population structure of Tambon Ko Chan consisted of 65.2 percent working population, 97.3 percent Buddhist, 64.9 percent single families, and 96.4 percent with privies for excreta disposal. The comparison of community health status at Tambon Ko Chan in 1985 and 2002 showed positive community health development. As such, the dependent population decreased from 41.0 to 34.6 percent. The illiteracy rate decreased from 14.7 to 4.4 percent. The median income increased from 18,700 baht per year in 1985 to 50,000 baht per year in 2002. On maternal and child health development, the antenatal care increased from 61.4 to 94.1 percent. The ANC in the first trimester increased from 7.6 to 64.7 percent. The home delivery decreased from 33.9 to 2.9 percent. Their environmental health was improved as the cesspool privy increased from 26.2 to 94.2 percent and they reduced their dependence on shallow wells as sourse of drinking water. In conclusion, the survey of health status at Tambon Ko Chan in 2002 as compared to 1985 showed the impressive progress in the community health development especially in maternal and child health and environmental health.
