Traffic accident is one of the main causes of death and economic loss in Thailand. More than half of it is related to driving under the influence of alcohol. This report aimed at showing blood alcohol of motor vehicle drivers and those involved in road accidents in the upper north 1994-1997. Blood samples, totalling 832, from hospitals were analyzed by Gas Chromatography to determine blood alcohol levels at the Regional Medical Sciences Center, Chiang Mai. Blood alcohol could be detected in 690 samples 82.9%. Of which 643 samples 77.3% had higher alcohol concentrations than the legal limit 50 mg%, Blood alcohol in the range of 150 to 200 mg% were reported in 30.0 percent of the samples, indicating a considerable high risk of car accident by drunken drivers and underlines the need of a more effective measure to curb drinking among drivers in The upper North of the country.
