Writing readiness is an important task for fuplis. Some children develop writing readiness at the age of 4 but others do not present this skill until age 6 or grade 1. The purpose of this was to survey writing readiness of pupils aged 4-6 years in Chiang Mai from 2000 November 29 to 2001 November 30. Names of districts and schools were selected by using puposive sampling, tnen accidental sampling was used to recruit purpils. Five hundred abd sixty six pupils of 19 schools in the areas of Amphone Mae Wang, Amphoe Mueang and Amphoe San Kamphaeng were included. Each student was tested for writing readiness by the writing. Readiness assessment Form adapted from Beery-Bukenica Developmental Test of Visual-motor Integration. The results of this study showed that the level of writing readiness increased with age. The majority of pupils (over 50%) presented their writing readiness at the average age of 5.25 years or 5 years 3 months. The puplis aged 5.6-6.0 years showed the most writing readiness 74.1% whereas the 4.0-4.5 years old puplis presented the least writing readiness 36.6%. However, some pupils in each age-group were barely ready. It is important, then, to assess the level of writing readiness of students possibly by the aforementioned test before implementing a hand writing training program.
