The objective of this descriptive research was to study self esteem and supported factors influencing the elderly. The data were collected by stratified systematic random sampling in 4 regions and Bangkok metropolitan, 1 district in each province and 2 district sin Bangkok. There were 308 elderly participants completed the constructed questionnaire by interviewing during July 9-September 12, 2004. Statistical analysis i.e. percentage, mean, standard deviation, chi-aquare significance at 0.05 was applied. The results found that the self-esteem of the elderly at medium level was 40.9% and at high level was 31.5%. The factors significantly associated with the self-esteem of the elderly at medium level was 40.9% and at high level was 31.5%. The factors significantly associated with the self-esteem were marrital status, education, sufficient income, social status, personal health problem, ability to perform of daily living self-satisfaction, help giving to children or relatives and friendsget helps from children or relatives and friends activities participation with children or relatives and friends, get helps from children of relatives and friends, activities participation with children or relatives and friends. The above supporting factors significantly associated with the self-esteem of the elderly. It was suggested that self-esteem should be promoted in term of emphasizing ongoing long-term planning on health and mental health promotion and prevention, quality of life for the elderly in the aspects of well-being socio-ecomic and enviroment
