The study of MHI (Individual) has objectives focusing on 3 issues 1) to develop mental health indicators of Southern Thai people by construct validity and reliability 2) working a staadard norm to formulate the level of mental health problems in Southern Thai people 3) to study mental health of Southern Thai people. The instrument consists of 85 items developed by the expert and work force of the Mental Health Department. The researcher added in 4 items of spirituality/religion/personal belief. Therefore, the MHI (Individual) become 89 items in all. The sample derived by using the method of multi-stage sampling from the tambon Management Organization level 1-5 in nakhonsrithammarat, Surathani, Chumphon, Ranong, Phuket, Songkhla, Yala, Pattani and Satun province, about 6,000 persons:Collecting data took 1 month starting from December 1999. The data was analyzed by the computer program SPSS For Windows. The results of the study of Mental Health Indicators (Individual) 89 items had a construct validity Factor loading > 0.40 and reliability Cronbach's alpha > 0.7 which were used to evaluate Southern Thai people. The standard norm of Mental Health in Southern Thai people was found to be : normal 50.1% , sub-normal 26.6%. The research suggests: 1) to reduce some items from MHI for the Southern of Thai people 2) to study the mental health of each province separately analyze standard norm of mental health for area 11, 12 and the different provinces are needed.
