รายละเอียด / Details:

Chemical use increasingly becomes a way of modern life. Inefficient management contributes to even more abuse and hence, risk to mankind. The study assesses the laboratory reports in examination of samples submitted to the regional medical sciences center Chiang Mai, B.E. 2527-2544, as requested by hospitals, provincial health offices, district health offices, police stations etc. Most of the 4,805 samples were ravages and gastric contents 64.1%. Toxic chemicals, dominated by pesticides 82.6%, could be found in 1,027 sample or 21.4 percent. The four most common toxic substances were methomy 55.8% parathion 6.4%, paraquat 5.6% and paracetamol 3.1%. The substances identified by the laboratory could be classified into 6 groups, insecticides 73.4%, drug 8.1%, herbicides 8.0%, rodenticides 1.2% anti-cholinesterase substances 3.4%, and other toxic chemicals 5.9%. From B.E. 2539 on, over-counter drugs, such as paracetamol, tranquilizers and drugs for mental disorders were more prominent in suicidal cases. In homicide, insecticides and cyanide often were identified while benzodiazepines were frequently associated with robbery cases. It is notable that prohibited toxic substances could still be detected. The laboratory-based surveillance can be informative and useful in portraying the dangerous abuse of toxic substances and giving a clue to its control.
