The purposes of this quasi-experimental research were to study psychosocial problems of chronic patients and their families and to evaluate the effectiveness of the Mental Health Promotion and Adjustment Model. The samples for finding out the psychosocial problems were 90 chronic patients and 90 family caregivers. The samples for conducing the MHPA program were 80 chronic patients and 80 family caregivers. These samples were equally randomly assigned into the experimental group and the control group. Group teaching and counseling were used in the MHPA Model. Psychosocial problems questionnaires were developed and tested for content validity and reliability. The reliability of questionnaire was 0.95. According to the model, it consisted of 3 steps:-1) building relationship between nurses and samples 2) health education and 3) coping skills promotion. All samples were asked to complete the questionnaires (pre-test). Then patients and their families in experimental group participated in the MHPA Model for 3 weeks. After the program, samples of both groups were asked to complete the questionnaires again (post-test) in the fourth week. All data were analyzed by using mean, standard deviation, and t-test. The major findings were: 1. Chronic patients reported that they struggled with psychological distress, occupational problems, poor sexual relationship. Less social activities, decreased social relationship, poor health status and decreased family relationship respectively. 2. Family members of chronic patients reported that they struggled with psychological distress, occupational problems, less social activities, poor sexual relationship, decreased social relationship, poor health status, and decreased family relationship respectively. 3. After the experiment, the scores of psychosocial and adjustment abilities of experimental group were higher than those control group. Conclusions: The MHPA Model is the major activity of nursing care that can be used for promotion of mental health and adjustment of chronic patients and families. Nurses can also apply this model for the other chronic discases by integrating specific knowledge and nursing care into the programs.
