To examine characteristics of adolescent suicides in Thailand during 1996-2004. Method: Data from the Bureau of Policy and strategy, ministry of public Health, was obtained to analyze mortality from suicide during 1996-2003. Data examined were rates, age groups, genders, methods of suicide and months of death. The study population were divided into 3 age group: early adolescence (10-14 years), middle adolescence (15-19 years) and late adolescence include early adulthood (20-24 years) Result : The average suicide rate of adolescents during 1996-2004 was 6.92 per 100,000. The male to female ratio was 3.2:1. Average suicide rates of early adolescence, middle adolescence, late adolescence include early adulthood were 0.64, 7.43 and 12.44 per 100,000 respectively. The highest rate of adolescent suicides was in 1997 and since then the rate has been decreasing. The most common method of suicide in both genders was hanging following by ingestion of domestic chemical substances. Using the later method has been decreasing since 1997. Adolescent suicide rate was highest in the northern region and lowest in the southern region. The highest and the lowest adolescent suicide rate weres in April and December respectively. Conclusion : In this study, the rate of suicide was highest in late adolescence include early adulthood especially in the male group. Suicide prevention strategies should be given priority to this age group.
