Objectives : To assess benzodiazepine misuse, in particular its prolonged use, benzodiazepine dependence and indications for usage, in outpatients treated at the internal-medicine clinic of Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital (MNCMH) Method : We evaluated outpatients receiving benzodiazepines from the internal medicine clinic of MNCMH in the respects of benzodiazepine use and misuse. Duration of benzodiazepine uses were classified into i) less than 1 month; ii) longer than 6 months. We assessed benzodiazepine dependence by using the Severity fo Dependence scale (SDS). To evaluate the indications of benzodiazepine use, we examined the existing of anxiety or depressive disorders by using the Thai Hospital Anxiety and Depression scale (Thai HADS) in patients given benzodiazepine for the first time during the study. Results : Of 100 internal-medicine outpatients receiving benzodiazepine, 42 patients 42% had used benzodiazepine for longer than 6 months. In addition, 8 patients 8% were dependent on benzodiazepine. Of 42 outpatients given benzodiazepine for the first time, on;y 1 patient 2.4% could be classified as an anxiety patient. Summary : Benzodiazepine misuse is common in internal-medicine outpatients of this university hospital. Almost a half of the patients appear to have prolonged benzodiazepine use. However, only few patients have benzodiazepine dependence. As very few patients receiving benzodiazepine have anxiety or depressive disorders, further studies may be needed to examine the indications for benzodiazepine use in this population.
