Objective: To investigate the use of hypnotic in community dwelling elderly in Thailand by determining the prevalence of hypnotic use in a period of one month as well as its association. Method: The study employed a cross-sectional survey research design. A multi-state random sampling was used to recruit 39,588 subjects from the elderly persons aged over 60 years residing in 23 provinces. Data were collected by means of interviews based on a questionnaire eliciting data regarding demographic characteristics of the subjects, their lifestyle, and their hypnotic use. Data were then analyzed in terms of percentage with 95% confidence interval. Univariate analysis and multiple logistic regression analysis were also employed to determine existing relationships. Results: A regards the prevalence of hypnotic use, 6.2% of the elderly subjects were taking some forms of hypnotics. The multivariate analysis showed that concomitant medical illnesses, initial insomnia, intermittent insomnia, depression, perceived health status, and aging were strongly associated with the use of hypnotics. Conclusion: The use of hypnotics is not uncommon among the Thai elderly poplation. The most important factors related to the use of hypnotic are concomitant medical illnesses and initial and intermittent insomnia. Future research should contribute to a better understanding of hypnotic drug utilization. Also, the reasons for these associations, health seeking behaviors, and physicians attitudes toward prescription of hypnotic should also be thoroughly explored in further studies.
