To understand the psychological and physiological effects of kratom. Methods: From March 2003 until May 2003, semi-structure interview, QOL-26 and GHQ-28 were applied with people in Phunpin city whom still using kratom. Descriptive statistical method was applied. Results: we found that most of the subject was male (93.1%), average age was 44.4 years old, most of the subject worked in plant and agriculture sector, For working hard (63%), refreshment and to relief pains are among the most common reasons of using kratom. The subject described effects of kratom on physical and psychological as happy, strong, active, relief of mayalgia and anxiety, and loss of appetite. Withdrawal effects were mayalgia, anergia, yawning, somnolence, anxiety, irritable mood and laziness. The average duration of withdrawal effect was 7 days. Most of the subject (98.7%) have good health and moderate to high quality of life (measured by GHQ-28 and QOL-26). Most of them (94.6%) had no legal problem with using kratom. Conclusions: This study shows that the main reason for people using kratoms is for working not recreation as in other substance dependence group. Because of its indigenous and positive effect of physical and mental health, very few people have tried to stop consumption. Because of its psychological and physiological effects on users, legalization of kratom need to be reconsidered.
