Bipolar disorder is an episodic psychiatric illness requiring lifelong treatment. Management of bipolar disorder is complicated due to lack of awareness among physicians, co-morbidity, patients compliance with the treatment, and treatment options. Despite the increasing availability of pharmacologic treatments for the various phases of bipolar disorder, a number of patients may experience only partial improvement of the symptoms. This article provides basic principles of current management strategies for patients with bipolar disorder and describes how these approaches can be incorporated into clinical practice.
