รายละเอียด / Details:

Worldwide, Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) accounts for an estimated 130 million chronic infections. Although Hepatitis C infection is ganerally considered a public health problem in Westem countries, evidence is growing that Hepatitis C Prevalence in some Asian countries may be higher than that in the US. Eligibility criteria for inclusion in this study were all intravenous buprenorphine abusers fulfilling the DSM-IV-TR criteria for opioid dependence, presenting to the Community Addictions Management Programme (CAMP). One hundred and six subjects, who consented to the study, completed an interviewer-administered questionnaire and underwent a urine and blood analysis. The age range of the sample was 20 to 64 years, with a mean age pf 39.5 (SD 7.9) years. The majority were male (90.6%) and Chinese (49.1%). The prevalence rate for HCV was 42.5% among the subjects included in our study. The odds of seroprevalence in those sharing needles were 5.6 times those who were not and the odds of seroprevalence among those using with others (peers or partners) were 6.3 as compared to those who use alone. This study done in Singapore provides important local data for disease prevention and health care planning. Most people with hepatitis C infection can be successfully treated but treatment success depends on early detection and appropriate treatment. More importantly treatment will not only prevent the progression of liver disease but also decrease the chance of new subjects from getting infected by reducing the large pool of existing HCV infection among IDUs.
