To determine the prevalence and severity of depressive disorders among the spouses of patients with alcohol dependence in term of dysthymic disorder, single depressive disorders and recurrent depressive disorder and identify factors associated with depressive disorders Material and Method: A descriptive cross-sectional hospital bases study among the spouses of patients with alcohol dependence who were treated as out-patient or in-patient at psychiatric unit, Sringarind Hospital using questionnaires as an assessment tool. The questionnaires consist of 2 parts: 1) demographic data of sample characteristics and associated factors for depressive disorders. 2) The structured interviewed CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview) section E Thai version which consist of 2 parts: 1) to determine the presence of depressive disorders, 2) to justify the type and severity of depressive disorders according to ICD-10. Statistics used in this study were percentage and correlation (Pearson chi--square and Fisher's exact test). Results: 48 spouses of patients with alcohol dependence were interviewed. The prevalence of depressive disorder was 85.42%, of whom wife were the majority of affected group. The highest type was recurrent depressive disorder (20.8%). Sex was the only statistically significant factor associated with depressive disorders [p=0.03 (OR 9.5, 95%CI=1.4-63.7]. Conclusion: Wife of patients with alcohol dependence tended to have a high prevalence of depressive disorders especially the recurrent depressive type. Alcohol drinking problems have direct effect to both alcohol user and their spouses. For a holistic approach, the medical personnel who look after alcohol dependence patients should include family issue as one of the targets in the treatment too.
