Interpersonal psychotherapy is a short-term psychotherapy that is approved for the treatment of depression. The goals of treatment are to reduce the patient's depressive symptoms, to solve interpersonal problem, and to increase the patient's interpersonal skills or social skills. The author reported the case of depressed patient treated with interpersonal psychotherapy. The main focus of this case was role transitions. The author used various techniques and methods to help patient clarify the old role, the new role, and the role transition, acknowledge the loss of old role, conceptualize the old role and the new role in a balanced and realistic way, and develop new social supports and new social skills. Results of treatment have been shown the reduction of the patient's depressive symptoms, the acceptance of his new role, and the better social adaptation.
