Depression disorders caused by traumatic events can be prevented. Victims and famillies members can be taught to recognize the symptoms of depression and to know how to prevent the condition from becoming worse. Exploring about perceptions of depression is needed to establish an appropriate prevention program. To develop technology for prevention of depression in general population and risk groups in Isaan communities of Thailand. Qualitative data collection methods including observations, focus group discussions and in-depth interviews were employed in 4 villages of Khon Khaen and Yasothon province during in 2006. Three hundred and twenty five informants derived from purposive and theoretical sampling participated in the study. Data was analyzed by using the content and thematic analyses. Five themes emerged, including 1) a family is a foundation of the circle of suffering and happiness, 2) Nang-leum, Kid-leum, Bor-sonjai-poodai is an Isaan phrase for depression 3) depression is a private issue that is regarded as an individual and family business, 4) the twelve tradition activities of Heed Sib-song is regarded as a source of happiness which in turn lead to a decrease in the suffering of people in all aged groups and 5) drinking alcohol is an origin of family suffering in Isaan society. The results indicated that the mental health promotion and prevention of depression should focus on increasing people's awareness of depression by using the Isaan phrase to determine depression, prioritized risk groups are adolescents, women living with alcohol-dependant husbands, people with chronic illness, people with disabilities, and the elderly living in non-supportive family. We developed 5 different technologies to prevent depression for general population and risk groups based on information about their perceptions of depression. These include radio spots, short drama, music, cartoon, and VCD. The technologies are made in both central Thai language and dialect language. Evaluation of developed technologies is on going process.
