Objective : To compare the bioavailability of 3 generic brands of carbarmazepine (CBZ) tablets to that of a proprietary brand in adult epileptic patients. Design : The study was designed as a double blind randomised three - phase crossover experiment. Setting : A mental hospital. Participants : There were 18 epileptic patients who had taken CBZ at least 5 months before entering the study. Main outcome measures : Ten blood specimen from each patient were collected at the steady state Plasma concentration of CBZ was analyzed for pharmacokinetic parameters such as Cmax ,AUC and tmax Results : There were no statistical significant differences of these parameters among 4 brands of CBZ. However, when comparing 90% CU of AUC of 3 generic brands to the proprietary brand, G1 and G2 had AUC lied within a range of 80% to 120%. The effect of gender and drug on these pharmacokinetic parameters were also analyzed. The breakthrough seizures occurred even though the plasma level of CBZ was at therapeutic level. Conclusion : Except G3 (PanitalR), the bioavailability of 2 generic brands of CBZ tablets (CarmapineR and carzepineR) and the proprietary brand (TegretalR) were equivalent in this sample of adult epileptic patients.
