Objective To investigate the characteristics of amphetamine users who were treated in Ratchaburi Hospital. Method A retrospective study in which 100 patients, aged 14 -23 years old, attended the hospital during June 1997-June 1998 were drawn into the study. Interviews were conducted and psychological tests were administered. Results The mean age when the samples first used amphetamine was 17 years. Ninety-five per cent of the subjects’ method of drug taking was smoking. The mean dose was 2 tablets, addictive duration mean was 16 months, and the drug cost them an average of 100 Bath/tablet. Curiosity (49.0%) and peer pressure (37.0%) led to the first use of drug. While second use was likely to be motivated by satisfaction on psychological property of drug (30%). Some behavioral problems related to drug use were skipping school (66%), selling drug (12%), and stealing (6%). Eleven percent of the subjects were not happy with their families, 35% of them lived close to the drug cartels, and 30% of them had a history of alcohol dependence among the family members. According to the HRSR scale, 17% of them were depressed, while 15% of them showed symptoms of psychotic disorders. Comparisons were made between the amphetamine dependent group (N=45) and the amphetamine use group (N=55). The results showed a statistical difference between the groups in terms of dosage, duration, frequency of using, method of using, peer groups, area of residence learning problem, selling drug, depression, and psychotic disorders. Conclusion : The study showed characteristics of amphetamine users. Predisposing factors such as family backgrounds, peer influence, environment exposing to drug, attitude, and psychiatric problems were explored. The appropriate prevention measures should be adopted promptly among the high-risk groups.
