ชื่อเรื่อง/Title: From Amphetamines to “E” and “Love” pills

แหล่งที่มา/Source: Journal of The Psychiatric Association of Thailand, Vol. 43 No.2 April-June 1998, P 184-190.

รายละเอียด / Details:

The “E” (for Ecstasy) and “Love” pills are both synthetic derivatives of the amphetamines. They share most of the common amphetamine pharmacological and clinical properties. Neurochemically, they all enhance the availability of the neurotransmitters Dopamine, Serotonin and Norepinephrine at the neuronal synapse. In addition to the initial stimulating and euphoric effects with subsequent depressive symptoms due to the depletion of the neurotransmitters, they uniquely possess the “psychedelic” effect in that they induce in the users “sense of love and connectedness”. Like the amphetamines, although in much smaller quantities, their ephedrine metabolites can be detected in the urine for up to 3 days. Deaths have been reported. Intoxication and overdose can be treated symptomatically. Urine acidification may be employed to increase their excretion from the body. Following this phase, treatment of the addiction is needed and it includes various pharmacological and non-pharmacological means with emphasis on relapse prevention and rehabilitation.
