Objective To compare the level of the vigilance task among rotating shift working nurses that work in the male-medical ward. Method The Gordon Diagnostic System (GDS) was used to measure the vigilance task in all 16 nurses in October 1996. Result All 16 nurses were female, their mean age was 28.5 years old and the mean duration of work experience was 5.68 years. When comparing the level of the vigilance task between beginning and finishing each rotation of shift work, it was found that only the night-shift work showed difference. The level of the vigilance task after each rotation of shift work was not different. Age and duration of work experience had no effect on the level of vigilance. Conclusion There are differences in the level of the vigilance task in medical nurses between beginning and finishing night shift work.
