The PRELAPSE (Preventing Relapse in Schizophrenia) Program was introduced in Thailand in January 1995. At the beginning all educational materials were prepared in the Thai language, and the workshop “Training PRELAPSE to the Trainers” was held in September 1996. After the Department of Mental Health of Thailand accepted the PRELAPSE program, it was implemented as a pilot study in five mental hospitals, i.e., Somdet Chaopraya Hospital, Srithunya Hospital, Saun Prung Hospital, Khon Kaen Psychiatric Hospital, and Suansaranrom Psychiatric Hospital. Of the 54 schizophrenic patients whose families joined the PRELAPSE program, the readmission rate decreased 44.4%, and the length of hospital stay decreased for 50% of these patients. Because the pilot PRELAPSE program has shown its ability to reduce the relapse rate of schizophrenic patients, the Department of Mental Health has transformed the PRELAPSE program in to the “Technology for Caring Relatives of Schizophrenic Patients” and aims to integrate this program within routine services in all mental hospitals.
