รายละเอียด / Details:

This study investigated the intellectual functioning measured by the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC) in high-and low-functioning children with autism. Twelve children with high-functioning autism and 18 children with low-functioning autism ranging in age from five years old to twelve years and five months old who were patients of Yuwaprasart waithayo-prathum child psychiatric hospital were tested to examine their level of intelligence, learning style, and profile of abilities. The data were analyzed by descriptive statistics and t-test. Results indicated that both high-and low-functioning children with autism had similar capabilities in sequential and simultaneous processing. In addition, they manifested relative strengths on Triangles, Number Recall and Gestalt Closure, reflecting marked abilities in nonverbal concept formation, automatic auditory-vocal memory and perceptual; closure. They also manifested relative weaknesses on work order, spatial memory and hand movements, reflecting inabilities in auditory-visual integration, spatial localization and integration of sequentially presented visual stimuli. The finding that the Mental Processing composite scale was not different to the Nonverbal scale suggested that the Nonverbal scale can be used as substitute for the Mental processing scale in children with language and communication impairments. The children with high-and low-functioning autism showed different levels of intellectual functioning, but the same profiles of functioning. This confirmed the presence of some specific abilities and deficits of children with autism. Thus, an educational or treatment program should be provided to meet the abilities of these children.
