Currently, the concept of health is concerned with not only the absence of disease, but also the presence of physical, mental, social, and spiritual health. Health promotion is a valuable strategy to help people achieve optimal health and well-being. Participating in health promoting behaviors is not limited to health people only. Any person, including an individual with chronic illness, has potential to participate in health-promoting behaviors to move toward optimal health with in the context of his/her conditions. For persons living with chronic illness, the illness is the primary concern. Enhancement and improvement of health is also necessary. These persons need additional effort focus on their health and illness simultaneously. Consequently, promoting the health of chronically ill persons is complex and challenging. The most important goal is making lifestyle adaptation and pursuing health-promoting behaviors. As a consequence, people with chronic illness may decrease symptoms. Limit disease progression, prevent secondary disability, reduce medical expense, sustain independence, and improve quality of life. Nurses take important roles in nursing practice, education, and research to help persons living with chronic illness pursue health-promoting behaviors.
