Objective To compare the level of vigilance in night-shift nurses during work hours and the level of vigilance in night-shift nurses with differences in workload. Methods A cross sectional study was carried out in 40 registered nurses and practical nurses in high workload wards (female medical ward and traumatic ward) and low workload wards (psychiatric ward and obstetric ward) before beginnng their work (11:30 pm) and during work hours (02:00, 04:00 and 06:00 am). The level of vigilance and sleep quality of all nurses were measured by the Gordon Diagnostic System (GDS) and the Thai version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (T-PSQI) respectively. Results There were no significant difference in the level of vigilance among night-shift nurses before and during work hours (p = 0.079) and the level of vigilance between night-shift nurses working in high workload wards and low workload wards (p = 0.569). In addition the quality of sleep was not significantly different. Mean difference = 1.05 95% CI for Diff (-0.195, 2.295) Conclusions There was no significant difference in the level of vigilance among night-shift nurses working in different workload wards and times.
