Objective: To study the effect of family counseling based on Satir Model in changing the family member’s self-esteem and their perception about familt functions. Method: The participants incluede 15 family members, 9 males and 6 females, from 5 Schizophrenic families admitted to Prasrimahabhodi Hospital at least the second time during June 21 and September 17,2004. The family counseling program Was organized into 4 sessions 1-2 hours each. The process of the family counseling used in the study based on human intrapsychic experience according to Satir Model. The family members self esteem and family functions were evaluated before and after the counseling program by Coopersmith’s Self Esteem Inventory and Chulalongkorn Family Inventory (CFI) repectively and their satisfaction were evaluated by interviewing with open-end questions. Results: 13 out of 15 participans self-esteem were increased after the program and they were satisfied with the counseling service. They realized their family functions at a higher level. The other two subjects were unable to be evaluated because of the severity of their physical illness and relapsing psychotic episode. Conclusion: Family counseling progam based on Satir Model in schizophrenic families helps in improving the family member’s self-esteem and their perception about family functions.
