Counseling is a helping strategy for suicidal attempted persons. Understanding about phenomenological of counseling service from client’s narrative useful for counseling development to improve an appropriate service for clients who have different cultural and believe. The specific purpose of this qualitative research were to explore and describe meaning of counseling methods of counseling service and characteristic of counselor experiences in suicidal attempted persons. Key informants were persons who received counseling about suicidal problems in commuity hospitals, Chiang Mai Province selected by purposive sampling. Data were collected during January to October 2005 by in-depth interviews in conjunction with field notes until saturated in 20th cases and data were validated by focus group. The content analysis was applied for data interpretation and analysis. It was found that seven meaning of counseling were given by suicidal attempted persons. The first-one was advising the second was teaching the third was supporting the forth was giving problem solving the fifth was close talking the six was giving ventilating and the seven was getting to the real problem. Five method of counseling service were given by key informants. The first-one was ventilating the second was risk assessment the third was reflecting the forth was giving information and the fifth was giving problem solving and they suggested the good methods that they need were (1) talking with the real problem and cause (2) talk about the adaptation after discharge (3) empathic responding with patients and some informants intended that they were not asked question about suicidal idea. Key informants impressed some characteristics of counselor and want to keeping on counseling such as trust polite speech have a reason friendly beautiful and good shape and they didn’t want counselor blaming them. Counselor’s characteristics that they want to be are calming smiling making contact with client’s feeling clean dressing look trust sincerely friendly polite soft neat beautiful good shape polite speech cheerful have a reason not blaming or not cursing and having sense of humor.
