Blood alcohol concentrations (BACs) of 550 drivers who had road traffic accidents in Nakhonratchasima and neighboring provinces were analyzed by Headspace Gas Chromatography technique. Blood specimens received from the government and private hospitals during, October 2001 - September 2002, were examined by Regional Medical Science Center, Nakhonratchasima. The drivers included 528 males (96%) and 22 females (4%). Most of the cases were 20-24 years old (19.5%) and ranged between 15-70 years old. The average of BACs were related significantly with gender, age, occupation group and the festive month (p-value ‹ 0.05). In 448 cases (81.5%), 435 males (97%) and 13 females (3%), BACs were found to be higher than 50 mg%. Only 70 of the specimens contained no ethyl alcohol at all. The BACs were mostly in the range of 101-200 mg% (183 cases, 33.2%). BACs in this range has an effect of decreasing driving skills of the drivers and may result in road accidents.
