Objective: To explore the perception of health and emotional changes in perimenopausal women with locomotor disability. Method: Data were obtained in the municipal area of Khon Kaen province, northeastern Thailand, during June 2005 and October 2006. Six women with locomotor disability whose menstruation had ceased for 3-12 months participated in the study. Data were collected using in-depth interview, non-participant observation and field notes analyzed by content analysis. Methodological triangulation ensured the validity and rigor of the study. Results: The findings revealed that women with locomotor disability perceived menopause in a positive way, even though the physical changes made their lives more difficult. The emotional changes included irritability, depressed mood, poor concentration and poor memory. These changes made their lives more insecure. Conclusion: Changes of health at menopause made lives of women with locomotor disability more difficult. There are risks of mental health problems. It is suggested that further study is needed to explore an appropriate mental health service for these women.
