This cross-sectional prospective study was conducted on 250 psoriasis cases who attended at out patient department of Institute of Dermatology during October 2003-September 2004. The purpose of this study is to survey prevalence of mental health and related psychiatric morbidity among psoriatic patients. The 28-item General Health Questionnaire (GHQ-28) composing of somatic symptom anxiety and sleep disturbance social dysfunction and severe depression was used and the result showed that 34.8% of studied cases had psychological problems. The highest average scale fell into anxiety and sleep disturbance domain. The patient who suffered from extensive skin lesions on both unexposed and exposed part of the body showed 3.7 times higher mental problems than those who had the lesion only on either covered area or exposed area. The patient with mental problem had significantly higher mean PASI SCORE (30+50.4) than those who have no mental health (P=.001). The personal characteristic factors showed no relation to mental health. This study revealed that psoriatic patients had higher psychological problems than healthy population. Thus health education is necessary for psoriatic patients and the counseling should be emphasized on stress and sleep disturbance coping especially for the patients who had skin lesions on both exposed and covered area.
